Defend public services from the third sector too!

For those few remaining Blairites who have not yet retreated to the bunker to contemplate political suicide, the voluntary sector (or as some young trendies now prefer, the “third sector”) offers a palatable alternative to outright privatisation whilst still appealing to their bias against the public sector.

Well check out this current news about Unique Care in Huddersfield – who have just sacked all their staff. That would appear to put this voluntary sector outfit right up there with private firms like Fremantle – about whom Barnet UNISON are organising a public meeting tomorrow, 16 January at 7pm at Hendon Town Hall – and Care UK, with whom UNISON have been in dispute in Islington.

These few examples are the tip of the iceberg of the damage which privatisation (and that includes the “third sector”) is doing to public services and public servants. And that’s without touching on housing, health or education!

Let’s get people along to the TUC lobby of Parliament to defend public services on 23 January – and then take things from there.

This area also represents the "back door" through which bigoted faith groups will be allowed to take over what used to democratically accountable services and deploy discrimination in employment of staff and on who gets the service. Something 99% of trade unionists should be very worried about.

Get those motions into congress and party conference asap brothers and sisters!
