Cameron to speak at TUC - No thanks!

Oh well back from the easter break with a bang The Inde today are reporting that Cameron could be the first Tory to speak at TUC conference - urgh and the year that Prentis is President (typical of how far right he is moving some would say)

The Inde claims Cameron is going on a  "beer and sandwiches offensive" (shows how often they go TUC cos its all wine and entrees now darling - apart from the LRC fringe which has beer and sarnies of course!)

The inde goes on to tell us that Cameron has appointed a personal trade union envoy Richard Balfe who was a former Labour MEP.

Seriously am i in some kind of dream reality?

Im glad that it repels some trade union leaders (see quote below) lets hope Prentis et al all come out and make it clear that Tories are not welcome.

Bob Crow, general secretary of the RMT rail workers' union, said: "What we find difficult to believe is that general secretaries would be stupid enough to be embroiled in some kind of publicity stunt. It would be completely ridiculous to have Cameron addressing the conference. The Tories are the authors of the anti-union legislation which is the principal thing tying the hands of the unions today. It is only a short period of time since the Thatcher government. It is the same party, with the same policies against the trade unions."

I hope it is all a very bad dream, MJ. I wouldn't at all be surprised if he turns up at a fringe organised by Tory trade unionists (do they still have an organised presence?)

I think they do I havent paid them much attention really but I remember they had some Tory MP speaking at a fringe a couple of years ago (didnt notice anyone last year - but they could have just slipped under my radar).

I'm going this year and I hope Im not subjected to Cameron! Mind you it does make you wonder if the RMT and some UNISON people walked out again (as they did when Blair spoke) if the UNISON members would be disciplined by UNISON!

What's the diffrence between him and Brown? Their "policies" don't seem any different to me. Cameron's a clever guy and stunts like these are exactly why he'll probably end up in No 10 after the next general election.

URRGGH..... its almost like inviting Thatcher into No 10...has that happened or was it another bad dream?
One of the TUCs I attended a speaker from FDA got up and said how wonderful Thatcher was to gasps and jeers.
If Cameron is invited I may have to leave again when he is speaking.
You are correct to question how far right we have gone. I notice our union UNISON badges itself as centre left uncanny how close to New Lab that is.

The horrid thing is that I can't in any real sense see any palpable difference between Canmeron speaking and Brown speaking. Yes, I should be shocked that a Tory is speaking @ TUC but not really possible when a Tory like Quentin Davies got a standing ovation @Labour Conference. Until we put clear red water between Labour and the Tories again these horros are inevitable. But Cameron would certainly NOT be welcome at my union conference.....

Brendan Barber, the TUC boss recently announced he supports the latest welfare reforms, basically workfare, yet this will undoubtedly drive down wages in the low paid sector, what side is he on?

Someone, somewhere has to be taking the piss surely? But then I concur with caroline and susan press, just what is the difference between New Labour and the Tories these days? Fine tooth comb anyone...
