Not that I usually quote the mail but firstly nice one Frank
" Writing in today's Mail on Sunday, Mr Field said Mr Brown's failure to state bluntly that he had made a complete mistake over the 10p tax and explain how the losers would get their money back was a major error. "None of the voters who raised the 10p issue with me in Thursday's elections had the faintest idea who would be covered," says Mr Field. "Neither did they believe the Government would deliver." He said the local election results showed "the size of the task Gordon Brown has in trying to present himself favourably to an alienated Labour vote, let alone the rest of the electorate".
And secondly J4L 08 anyone??
" The threat to Brown's survival as Prime Minister intensified last night with the revelation that a Labour MP is preparing to mount a 'stalking horse' leadership challenge against him. Left-winger John McDonnell told friends he is ready to try to topple Mr Brown following Labour's disastrous showing in Thursday's local elections. In a further blow, former Minister Frank Field is to lead another revolt in the continuing row over the abolition of the 10p tax band, amid claims that Mr Brown has failed to live up to promises to compensate the losers. The twin setbacks came as Mr Brown spends the weekend at his official country home, Chequers, working out how to save his beleaguered administration, less than nine months after he succeeded Tony Blair. Challenge: John McDonnell is 'ready to try to topple Mr Brown' The Prime Minister is planning a series of moves to try to regain the trust of voters, including a Government reshuffle in the next few weeks, which could see three Cabinet Ministers sacked or demoted. Sources speaking on behalf of Mr McDonnell told The Mail on Sunday he believes a challenge to Mr Brown may be the only way to avoid defeat to David Cameron in the next General Election. They acknowledge Mr McDonnell has little chance of winning, but say he is ready to act as a "stalking horse" to prepare the ground for a better-known Labour figure to take on – and beat – Mr Brown. A similar "stalking horse" challenge, by Tory MP Sir Anthony Meyer, played a key role in the rebellion that ousted Margaret Thatcher in favour of John Major in 1990. "John has talked at length about challenging Brown and is absolutely serious about it," said a close friend of Mr McDonnell. "He is not the type to be scared off by the Whips." Hayes and Harlington MP Mr McDonnell tried to contest the Labour leadership when Tony Blair stepped down last year, but failed to get enough support from Labour MPs. However, he believes that this time he may be able to recruit support from all sections of the party, not just his fellow Left-wingers. "Discontent with Gordon Brown is so widespread that John believes he can bring together a broad coalition of people who believe the party leader is letting them down," said one MP. Mr McDonnell will make a final decision on whether to challenge Mr Brown after gauging the mood of Labour MPs. Under Labour rules, Mr McDonnell needs the support of 71 fellow MPs to challenge Mr Brown. A contest can go ahead only if it is endorsed by the party conference in September. But Mr Brown could come under threat before then. The Mail on Sunday has learned that rebel Labour MPs and Ministers have discussed a number of ways of getting him out. They include the possibility of a delegation of Cabinet Ministers telling him to step down and a mass revolt by his backbenchers.

Well now comrade, I never had you down as a Mail on Sunday reader ;p
Yes J4L 08 is probably what we need. I think John McD - and other socialist MPs - need to be assertive right now, and that posing the question of the Party leadership is unavoidable.
We need those who have a platform to articulate a socialist alternative to New Labour to use that platform.
John's chances of becoming Party Leader in 2008 may be little better than Gordon Brown's chances of still being Leader in 2011 but that isn't the point.
The left must force the pace of a serious debate, from a perspective of socialist principle rather than the disorientation, demoralisation and careerist panic of the BlairBrownites.
Yes,I also spotted the MoS front page which in truth now looks like the News Editor fot a bit excited and bigged it up. But no harm done as when did John McDonnell or indded the Labour Left last make the front pages......it looks as though what's actually going to be happening is that Saturday's briefing AGM will be used as a launchpad to go on the offensive against Brown and try and build up a groundswell of opposition in the Party to stop the sauicidal road New Labour is taking us down. Sounds like it's going to be a good day....... LRC Briefing, anyone ???????
