Delroy Creary 4 UNISON General Secretary

DELROY CREARY
Dear Colleague,
I am writing to you all asking for your branch’s nomination in UNISON General Secretary election.
I’m standing because I believe we have deflected away from our beliefs and instincts to protect our membership in their time of need. It is time for a new sense of direction.
As the Branch Secretary at Manchester Metropolitan University I have led a branch at the forefront of the fight against public spending cuts. We have faced an enormous attack with real threats on terms and conditions, facilities agreements, pensions and jobs.
There is no more time to keep us sitting on the fence. Following the Government’s mismanagement of the economy the public sector is taking the brunt of the Government attacks, we must not allow our members to be punished for a mess they did not create; we must get our union in fighting form.
To build our union for the future it will need strength, courage and wisdom I have the vision and drive to see this through. I would be standing for:
• A Unified union where all voices must be heard and listened to and members to form a consensus on the way forward.
• An immediate National Strategy and campaign on public sector job cuts
• The need to stand up strong against the attack on union activists and never allow our democratic right to organise, campaign and speak out to be threatened by unfair practices used by employers. Additionally we must do more to fight the anti-trade union laws.
• The commitment of our union in challenging all forms of discrimination should no longer be spoken but acted upon, “Action speaks louder than words”
• A democratic political fund break the labour link
• UNISON resources and time must be used in a more appropriate fashion and manner to better address the serious attacks faced by our branches – the role of regional and national UNISON is to support branches in fighting for their members.
• Securing the sustainability of UNISON by recruiting young members. We need to promote UNISON in the minds of young people and this can only be achieved if they are convinced we stand up for their concerns and for our diverse membership in their time of need. We should back young activists who stand up against the far right, discrimination and wars.
If you believe that the membership should now be equipped to stand up and fight for our rights, from Retired members to Young members, I want to help make this collective movement happen and make our diverse membership stronger.
Now is the time for a serious leader to deal with the serious business of fighting Public Sector cuts, empowering Branches and improving the democracy within the union
With best regards
Delroy Creary
